iTrail @ Chinatown Singapore

  Introduction

We went to China town on 29 January 2015. Chinatown is a place where most tourists go. We went there by bus. During our trail we went to Duxton Road, Duxton Hill, Maxwell Food Centre, Sri Mariamman Temple and Masjid Jamae.
                                                      History of Chinatown

Wang Dayuan visited Singapore which was then called Temasek or Dan Ma Xi in 1330 and recorded that there was a Chinese community. Under the raffles Plan of Singapore, the area originally was a division of colonial Singapore where Chinese immigrants tended to reside. Although as Singapore grew, Chinese immigrants settled in other areas of the island city, Chinatown became overcrowded within decades of Singapore’s founding in 1819 and remained such until many residents were relocated at the initiation of Singapore’s governmental Housing Development Board in the 1960s

                                                     Stations

The Jinricksha was introduce to Singapore in 1880. There are many rickshaw pullers in Duxton Road and Duxton Hill. Opium and gambling dens, as well as cheap brothels, used to flourish on Duxton Road. Most rickshaw pullers came from China and some from Malaysia and Thailand. Many beautiful residences and shophouses are there.

The Maxwell Food Centre is well known for its affordable, tasty and huge variety of local hawker food.

The Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple. The Sri Mariamman Temple was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai. The compound wall is also decorated with ornamental mouldings, as well as figures placed on top of the wall at various points, including several prominent seated cow sculptures.

The Masjid Jamae was set up by Chulias. The Chulias are Tamil Muslims from the Coromandel Coast of South India. They came to Singapore and mostly work as traders and money traders. they set up 3 mosque within a short time. Masjid Jamae faced towards Mecca.

         Reflection
A Yeun: I learnt a lot in my trip to Chinatown. I realized how the pioneers of Singapore have worked so hard to build a better city of Singapore. Regardless of our race we should all build a better city for the future of Singapore .

Dilys; I learnt a lot of history knowledge in Chinatown.i also learnt that in the past there were samsui women who came from china when they were between 12 to 13 to work. They also used their bare hands to build buildings just for the future generation which is us. I think we should always be grateful to them regardless of race.

Berenice:The learning journey to Chinatown was a fun experience for me to learn new things with my friends.
Dionne: I think that going to china town is a very interesting experience. I learnt all about other religions and our country back then. The coolies who came to Singapore mostly worked as trishaw or rickshaw pullers. I also enjoyed the food there at Maxwell Food Centre. (Especially the carrot cake)
